Sydney World Pride 2023
March 2, 2023 | Altura Blog
There were rainbows to be found in every corner of Sydney when WorldPride 2023 hit the ground running on February 17 and people gathered to parade, party and celebrate this global festival, held for the first time in the southern hemisphere. Pride of place on opening night were the sails of the Sydney Opera House, which lit up in the colours of the Progress Pride flag.
Staged over 17 days, Sydney WorldPride 2023 offered more than 300 events with 500,000 participants and an estimated 78,000 visitors. They were treated to the city’s much loved Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, where hundreds of thousands of well-wishers packed into Oxford Street to cheer on over 200 spectacularly decorated floats but also pay respect to the “78ers”, a courageous group who paved the way with the original parade that ended in violence and bloodshed. Other WorldPride offerings included arts, sport and theatre events, concerts, parties, First Nations programs and a human rights conference. We hope everyone who attended a Sydney WorldPride 2023 event had a fabulous time!
