International Nurses Day 2024
May 9, 2024 | Altura Blog
International Nurses Day (IND) is an annual celebration observed on May 12th, honoring the invaluable contributions of nurses worldwide. Each year on the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, the International Council of Nurses (ICN), representing over 130 national nursing associations and over 28 million nurses globally, selects a theme for the occasion. This year’s theme is “Nurses Make the Difference”.
In anticipation of IND, here are five ways to honour and celebrate this day:
1. Show Appreciation to a Colleague:
Take advantage of International Nurses Day to show gratitude to a colleague who has influenced your career positively. Send them a heartfelt message wishing them a happy International Nurses Day and acknowledging their invaluable contributions.
2. Share Your Pride in Nursing:
Use International Nursing Day as an opportunity to express your pride in being a nurse. Consider sharing a post on social media to raise awareness about IND and offer insights into your nursing experience. By showcasing the diversity of nursing roles, you contribute to fostering a positive image of the profession.
3. Organise a Nurses Breakfast:
Join nurses across the country in hosting National Nurses Breakfast events. These gatherings offer a chance to pause amidst the busy day, connect with colleagues, and celebrate the nursing profession.
4. Participate in an event:
Australian College of Nursing locations throughout Australia will host special networking events, such as the ACT Region National Nurses Breakfast and the International Nurses Day Darling Downs Region event. Attend these gatherings to celebrate with fellow nurses, forge professional connections, and engage in enriching conversations.
5. Practice Self-Care:
Amidst the celebrations, prioritise self-care. Whether it’s savoring a quiet moment with a cup of coffee, scheduling a relaxing massage for later, or exploring our curated self-care tips, indulge in activities that bring you joy and rejuvenation.
As International Nurses Day approaches, let’s recognise its significance beyond just a date on the calendar. It’s a testament to the expertise, compassion, and impact nurses bring to aged care. While our suggestions provide a starting point for celebration, reflection, and renewal, the true essence of IND lies in acknowledging the profound influence nurses have on individuals, families, and communities worldwide. However you choose to observe the day, may it reaffirm your value and pride in being part of the nursing profession!
